Welcome to Recognizably Jewish

I’ve always been proud to be Jewish. But I’ve never been religious.

As my two young children have grown older, I’ve tried to think more intentionally about how to convey to them my particular variety of love and respect for Judaism and Jewishness. That process took on greater urgency, and greater importance, in the wake of October 7.

I’m a big fan of podcasts, so naturally I went looking for ones that talked about the aspects of Jewish culture I hold dear. I was profoundly surprised to find there really wasn’t anything. Don’t get me wrong; there are so many wonderful Jewish podcasts. But they tend to focus on:

  • Religious dimensions of Judaism;

  • Israel and its place in global politics;

  • Current events from a Jewish perspective; and

  • Jewish history.

Those are all interesting, but they aren’t what I was looking for. They aren’t about Jewish culture.

So I’ve taken a leap of faith and started Recognizably Jewish, a podcast that’s expressly about Jewish culture. There are lots of ways to listen, including:

And of course you can follow Recognizably Jewish on social media, including:

And because podcasts aren’t for everyone, now I’ve started this Substack as well. I hope you’ll join me on this fascinating journey into Jewish culture.
